PRIDE HOME

About
Pride Home

Pride Home's mission is to empower the transgender community through livelihood support, health support and advocacy for legal rights. We have recently established a mentorship and skill development center for the LGBTQIA+ community. The center provides a safe and supportive space for community members to acquire new skills, enhance their employability, and promote self-reliance and empowerment. It is a key initiative to help members of the queer community integrate into mainstream society and achieve their goals.

The transgender community in India (also known as hijras), which is estimated to be over 500,000 is among the most vulnerable, most abused and the least understood populations in that country. Started by Sarita Shukla and operating with Pahal - Nurturing Lives, Pride Home works to uplift this community through entrepreneurship development, livelihood exchange, insuring access to public health facilities, and working to help the transgender community achieve legal rights and social acceptance.

Gender Identity and Financial Inclusion

Prior to 2018, transgenders in India did not have the ability to bank or vote as their ID cards did not match how they looked. Pride Home has worked to get their community members voter ID cards, Aadhar Cards, Pan Cards and even bank accounts - with all documents recognizing them as transgender.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many in the LGBTQIA+ community lost their livelihoods when they were forced to be locked down. Pride Home and Pahal responded by providing grocery kits.
